Pre-pointe-assessment
Helping dancers move safely and confidently to pointe
Moving to pointe is an exciting milestone in a dancer’s journey - but it’s also one that requires adequate strength, control and readiness to reduce the risk of injury.
At Fit Foot Podiatry, our Pre-Pointe Assessments are designed to determine whether a dancer is physically ready to commence pointe work and to provide clear guidance for dancers, parents and teachers.
What is a Pre-Pointe Assessment?
A pre-pointe assessment is a comprehensive musculoskeletal screening that evaluates whether a dancer has the strength, stability and control required for pointe work.
It is typically recommended before a dancer is fitted for pointe shoes, usually around ages 11-13, depending on training and development.
What We Assess
During the assessment, our podiatrist will assess:
- Foot and ankle strength and mobility
- Lower limb alignment and control
- Core strength and balance
- Range of motion relevant to ballet technique
- Ability to safely perform key functional movements
This assessment focuses on injury prevention and long-term dancer health.
Who Should Have a Pre-Pointe Assessment?
Pre-pointe assessments are recommended for:
- Dancers preparing to start pointe work
- Dancers returning to ballet after injury
- Dancers who have been advised by their teacher to seek clearance
- Parents wanting reassurance before their child begins pointe
After the Assessment
Following the assessment, we provide:
- Clear feedback on pointe readiness
- Individualised strengthening or conditioning exercises (if required)
- Advice on injury prevention and safe progression
- Written recommendations that can be shared with dance teachers
- If a dancer is not yet ready, we focus on what needs to improve and how to get there safely.
